Apple has been rumored to be adding a touchscreen laptop to its offerings sometime soon. Now, Dow Jones has picked up on rumors from the Commercial Times. Gizmodo seems to be the portal this is all channeling through, so I’ll keep following them for more updates.
If the rumors are true, I think it’s fantastic news. I have been accused of being somewhat of an Apple fanboy, which is true. But a touchscreen laptop makes a ton of sense for Apple, given the success they’ve had with the iPod Touch and iPhone.
People are going to complain about the lack of a physical keyboard, but they’re missing the point. A physical keyboard constrains your input to a single device; not having one means that you can change the input device to fit your needs. Users who are more comfortable with a Dvorak keyboard or who need handicap-accessible devices can easily change the screen to make those usable. Or application designers can come up with completely new ways of interfacing with a device.
We’ll see what happens. But I’m firmly in favor of this being true.
