Another breaking news win for Twitter

I’m writing this just after following a dramatic news story: a large chunk of debris came unusually close to the International Space Station today. The possibility of a collision was low, but the debris chunk was large.

I first heard about it by a tweet from @BadAstronomer Phil Plait, whom I follow on Twitter and at his blog. As the time for possible impact drew closer, I was following tweets him and @Nancy_A. The NASA site also had some info on the possible encounter, but not as quickly as the astronomers did.

At the time I’m writing, the New York Times hasn’t picked up on it yet, and CNN only got the story immediately before the debris was scheduled to hit.

Here’s the screen shot from right after the debris had passed:

That’s more than a little ironic, don’t you think?

By the way, if you check out @BadAstronomer and @Nancy_A, you can get a good look at how it all came down.
