Monday morning link dump

I’d write more, but I don’t have a lot of time before the last of newsroom computers get done imaging. Last week, we installed 21 new iMacs on the rim, sports and copy desks, and we’re getting ready to install nine more in Photo and Graphics. But there are a few things going on recently that caught my eye:

  • My dad’s Web site is now up and running. It’s pretty basic but it hopefully will serve as more than a placeholder for him while he gets is company together.
  • If you have an extra $40, you should really consider getting the MacHeist bundle today. You get 12 pretty good indie Mac apps, plus two extra if you tweet about it. World of Goo was what pushed me over the edge on this one.
  • Steve Yelvington has a good post on newsroom convergence. A wide variety of people from the industry gave him their opinions on the subject. Once I have time to delve into it a little more, I’ll post a response/reading of it.
  • Robert Niles also has an interesting post up about what journalists value, and why it matters in the online age.
  • And in the “no duh” category, researchers have found that playing video games can reinforce positive behavior.

As long as I’m on the games story: why this is news I’m not entirely sure. Given the assumption that many nutters people seem to hold — namely, that games reinforce negative behavior — why is it so shocking that they could also reinforce positive behavior? Either way, you’re talking about learned patterns of behavior, and trees of consequence that reward players for a particular set of in-game actions.
